This is my finished poster for my newspaper. I decided to create a poster advertising the paper having a bumper christmas issue. I looked at a poster from the news as an example and it was an advertisement for the 'days out' guide so i decided to follow example in order to make my poster look more realistic and that it could be used. I decided to use my whole image as the background because it makes the poster seem more 'full' and 'busy' and interesting for the reader and avoids having blank space.
I've now completed my website and published it to the intranet, ensuring all hyperlinks are working.

I've now added the picture to my main article page and the picture looks alot more appealing for the reader and really make you focus on the person in the image, rather than the surroundings.
I've now added a hyper link on my homepage, when the user clicks on the the particular stories headline it directs them to the page i've made with the full story and picture on.

I decided to crop the image i'm using on my website because the orginal picture seemed like it had alot of photo that wasn't in use, and was un-needed. I decided to crop how wide it is so that the image focuses on the person in the image instead of the surroundings. I also decided to crop it in order to take the 'South Downs College' logo out due to if this story was real the college would have to agree to have the logo in the story but this story may give readers a bad impression of the college.

I've now started making my second page of my newspapers website. I've decided to use the exact same layout as the homepage but the middle section has one main story instead of many little ones. The reason I decided to do this was after I looked at many different example websites I saw that its all in the same format/layout (each page) and its just the stories that change. I've made a hyperlink on my homepage so that when the user clicks on the 'student caught with cocaine' header it directs the user to this story.
I've now produced my finished website homepage. I decided to ask for feedback from various different audiences and they all seemed to like the layout because it was kept simple. The other negative feedback that I received was that there were too many links at the bottom of the newspaper so with this feedback i decided to remove the 'services' section. I also decided to add an advert at the right hand side of the website because another bit of feedback i also got was that there are usually more adverts on a local newspaper website.
After looking at various newspapers websites i've also seen that many of the sites have links at the bottom of the page, these links are other ways of getting round the site and also some lead to external sites. So i made sure I added this feature to my site.
I've now added placed the pictures onto the website and added the header along with them, i've also added a slight sum up of the stories.

These are the pictures i have deicded to use on my webpage, i'm going to put headlines next to them and then a sentence to sum up what the picture and headline is about, so it basically sums up the story. Most newspaper websites have there stories like this so you can see what various stories are about and then click on the one you find most intriguing and want to read. The headlines are going to be as follows
-'Student caught with cocaine.'
-'Marwell Zoo's world class attraction.'
-'Portsmouth's night club crack down.'
I've now added the tab to my header and also below i've added the date and also a 'log in' and 'register' sign. I've added this because most newspaper websites have this option to enabled readers to make accounts with them and get updated with the latest news via email etc.
I've created this tab to place under my header of my website, this is the navigation side of the website to enabledcustomers to get from one section to another. I've also added a search bar to enable the customers to search for a specific story they want to read about in order to save them from looking round the whole site for it. I decided to add this tab because its a key feature of any local newspaper website.
After looking at other newspapers websites i've now started creating mine. I'm using a programme called iweb which allows me to make the pages as well as insert hyperlinks to link the pages. Above is my website header, i thought i'd add a header because all the newspapers websites i've looked at have the name of the newspaper at the time along with their tagline and logo. Websites also include adverts which are similar to the ones included on the actual newspapers but they make the adverts more interactive, for example because able to click on say a car dealer-ship advert and it takes you straight to the car dealer-ship's website. I've included this on mine but using the same advert i've used on the front page of my newspaper but i've changed the text so that the readers can click on the advert and fill in and online form to enter etc which makes it more interactive.

Friday 11 February 2011

I'm now starting to create a website for my local newspaper. In order to do this I have researched into local newspapers websites to see what they include and how they layout the websites.
This is an example of 'the news' website which i've been looking at. The website is very basic in order to alloow the users to navigate around it easily and find example what they are looking for. One of the key elements this website seems to have is adverts therefore including them on the website I create for my newspaper is a must.

In order to fill the space in the bottom left hand corner I decided to add a phone number for readers for if they want a more detailed weather forecast, I decided to add this there because the amount of space left isn't enough for an article therefore I decided this is the best solution after looking at newspapers I saw that many have done the same thing. In order to make the banner more interesting and appealing i decided to remove the 'news' banner and stretch out the 'inside' banner to make it larger. I then added whats inside to make the banner have more of a meaning to readers. It also fills in the space that would just be a plain block of colour otherwise and looking at other newspaper none of them seemed to have just random blocks of colour. Therefore this being my final newspaper page.
I've now added another article in the bottom right hand corner, after asking various people about what more was needed on my newspaper to make it look like a professional local newspaper the main feedback I recieved was that there needed to be more picture on the second page. So with this in mind I decided to add a picture to my the bottom right hand corner's article and it makes the page look alot more interesting and means it not just consant text. The other comments that were made on the paper was the white patch in the bottom left hand corner and that it needs filling. Also the banner looks too plain and abit pointless.
I've decided to use this picture on my second page as I feel like it's a good image that will attract the readers attention and looks professional. The image is also focused on Pixie herself.

I've decided to play the picture on the top right hand side of the article box so  it allows me to write the article around it which creates an 'L' shape. I've decided to do this because while looking at local newspaper they seem to do this alot of the time, it also makes the newspaper look alot more interesting instead of having all the articles in the same format.

Thursday 3 February 2011

With the picture and headling now in place, I've started added stories that i've written on the newspaper. I've decided to do the main story in three columns and then adding another article below in on the right to make the paper seem more interesting. I then decided to add a longer story at the bottom. By looking at examples of other local newspaper this one seems to be lacking pictures at the moment which is something i'm going to have to consider with the other articles I'm going to place in.

I decided I was going to add headline 'youtube hit' to go with the picture and to match the article about this band being signed to a major record label. I first of all tried out placing the headling on top of the picture and then changing the font to white but the overall look didn't look right for a typical newspaper and I felt that it made it look more like a front page image. With this in mind I decided to change the font colour to black and place it under the image. After doing this I printed out both copies and asked people for their own opinion on what looked the best to them and the headline being at the bottom was the clear favourite so in conclusion I choose to put the headline under the image.

I've know started adding stories to my front page, I've decided to have my main picture of a band that played in cosham, although the photo was good quality it was slightly wonky so I had to edit it on facebook and gave it a 2% rotate to ensure the stage looked straight. I also cropped the image because the bottom section had alot of stageing on it which would isn't really needed in the photograph and is dead space, this means the consumer reading it still gets the full impact of the picture and realises that the band are the main focus.

Sunday 23 January 2011

I've now compared the changes and personally feel like the second version of this newspaper looks better and more fulfilling for the reader. I printed off both copies to ask for opinions from different people in different age groups and they also had the same view and commented on the extra colour that i've added and the fact that the grey, red, and white contrast each other nicely.
The heading of my newspaper still seemed abit dull. I looked at other newspaper and they seem to have made theirs alot more interesting by adding symbols, such as bullet points and arrows. I decided to put and white arrow next to the news heading which seem more interesting.
I have now added in all the weather symbols onto the page, the weather is very similar each day therefore the cloud fitted each day. I also decided that and extra heading was needed therefore I added a 'inside' heading because I found that most of the newspaper I looked at had included this to give the reader even more of an insight to what else was in the newspaper and where to find it as an extra to the information on the front page, the heading needed something else to make it stand out so I decided to add a red background to see if that did the trick. It now makes the page look alot more appealing and less boring with all the blacks and grey and 'dull' colours used.
This is one of the main weather symbols I have created for my weather collumn. I created this cloud on photoshop simply by using the pencil tool. I had to make sure that the line was thick enough for readers to see. I also made it slightly 'cartoonish' in order to make it seem abit more 'fun'.
I've decided to have heading which the text white and the background box grey, I decided to do this because it goes with the magazines etho's and housestyle. I've made sure that i've kept the grey background with white headings constant in the weather collumn in order to keep with the newspapers style. I've created boxes in which I need to add weather symbols such as clouds or rain or the text 'clear'. This is enabled the reader to understand the weather in abit more detail and also makes it alot more aesthetically pleasing.
I have now started work on my second page of my newspaper. First of all I looked at other newspaper and realised they had margins again on the second page that are different to the front page therefore Indesign helped me add margins and collumns to guide me, I ensured that I left margin larger than the right margin and the top margin larger than the bottom to ensure it had the professional newspaper look. I've also started to add a header for my second page and made sure I included things such as the page number, the newspaper's website and most importantly the date. I made sure I included these because by looking at example local newspapers they all seemed to include them which made it apparent that I needed to place them on my newspaper. I've also started to add a weather collumn. Due to this local newspaper being based in portsmouth I made sure the weather included things such as the sailing forecast and high and low tides because Portsmouth is known for it's navy/sailing background therefore the local readers would find it extremely useful and interesting to help them on whether they want to go sailing etc.

Thursday 6 January 2011

I've now made the finishes touches to the front page of my newspaper. I've added page numbers for the stories to enabled the reader to know exactly where the story they want to read is in the newspaper to save them from the hassle of searching through and realized while looking at other newspapers it's one of the key elements included on local newspapers and newspapers in general. I've also decided to make the 'Party goes with a bang' headline a lot bigger, it now stands out a lot more and is the first thing that the reader is drawn to.

I've now made some changes to my newspaper front cover. While looking at various other local newspapers such as the news I realized that most newspapers have a margin around the outside around the edge and also how the bottom margin is slightly bigger than the top and also how the right hand margin is larger than the left hand margin so i needed to make sure i sized them right in order to make it look more professional and like an actual newspaper that could be sold in the shops, so on indesign i managed to add some margins on my newspaper quite easily although this meant i had to re-size everything on my newspaper and make the text, headlines and pictures smaller. I also decided that the headlines I have for the  sub-stories didn't really make the picture and could be seen as mis-leading. For example the picture of a student wiping the board didn't seem like the student was on strike so i therefore changed the headline from 'student strikes' to 'highest college applicants ever' because i felt like it fitting the photograph better. I also had the same issue with the weather story about the snow. The headline for this was 'snow chaos' and when looking at the photograph there was no chaos at all and it looked like peaceful snow that wasn't really an issue so i changed the headline to 'The big freeze' to ensure that it matches the photo which it now does. On the showbiz section luckily the headline matched the photograph but it 'Pixie Portsmouth' doesn't really make sense, it doesn't explain why her name has been put next to the word Portsmouth and what she was doing there so i decided to change the headline to 'Pixie plays Portsmouth' to give the headline a bit more detail for the reader. I also decided to change the picture of Pixie Lott because I felt like it was a much better quality picture compared to the one that was put there originally.
